PCE inflation contracts: the Fed's preferred measure

The personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index comes from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) in its monthly Personal Income and Outlays report. It is the measure behind the Fed's 2% inflation goal.

What to check before you trade

  1. Headline or core? Headline PCE covers everything; core PCE excludes food and energy. The Fed watches both, with core often treated as the better guide to the trend.
  2. Monthly or 12-month change? Contracts can settle on either. The 2% goal refers to the 12-month change in headline PCE.
  3. Rounding and strike wording. BEA reports percent changes to one decimal place. Check whether the strike value itself counts as yes.
  4. Revisions. PCE figures for earlier months are revised in later reports and in BEA's annual update. Most contracts settle on the first release for the reference month; read the terms.

How PCE differs from CPI

Because a lot of PCE is predictable from earlier data, PCE contract prices often move most on CPI day, not on PCE day.

Range contracts are a field

When PCE outcomes are listed as ranges, exactly one settles yes. Add up their prices: anything above 100¢ is the built-in markup.

Questions

When is PCE released?

At 8:30 a.m. Eastern in BEA's Personal Income and Outlays report, near the end of each month. The next releases are November 25 and December 23, 2026, then January 28, 2027.

Why does the Fed use PCE instead of CPI?

The Fed's 2% inflation goal is defined using the PCE price index, which covers a broader range of spending and adjusts its weights as spending patterns change.

Is PCE seasonally adjusted?

BEA's monthly PCE price figures are seasonally adjusted. Check which measure and adjustment your contract's rules name.
